Hokies top UNC Greensboro 1-0 on first of two-day tournament

BLACKSBURG, Va. - A Gina Om goal in the 60th minute gave Virginia Tech the 1-0 lead over UNC Greensboro and the win, Friday. The game was the first of two the Hokies will play at the UNC Greensboro Tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina. Tech and High Point square off Saturday at 1 p.m.

Both UNC Greensboro and Tech were scoreless in the first half of the game. Tech had the edge in shots, 8-3, while UNC Greensboro led in saves (3-1) and corner kicks (3-2).

Om's goal at the 60:18 mark propelled Virginia Tech ahead of the Spartans. Om's game-winner was aided by both Laurie Beth Puglisi and Julian Johnson. The notch marked Om's fourth for the season and her second game winner. Johnson now has four assists for the season, while Puglisi has two.

Tech finished the game with 15 shots, compared to UNC Greensboro's eight. Tech's goalkeeper, senior Mallory Soldner, played all 90 minutes to give Tech its second shutout in as many games. She had four shots for the night.

After the second game against High Point, the Hokies return home for the Virginia Tech Classic, hosting four games over three days.
