Evansville defeats Hokies 3-0 Saturday
Mary Elizabeth Newton and Laurie Beth Puglisi both record three shots
September 16, 2006 EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The University of Evansville Purple Aces defeated the Virginia Tech women's soccer team, Saturday, 3-0. The event was contested at McCutchan Stadium in Evansville, Ind., in the two team's first-ever meeting. The Hokies are now 4-2-1, while Evansville improved to 3-3-0. The Purple Aces were on the board 38 seconds into the match when the Purple Ace's Heidi Gray passed up the middle to Kayla Lambert. Lambert chipped it over Tech goalkeeper Mallory Soldner. Mia Tofano had Evansville's second goal at the 12:06 mark, on a pass from Lambert. Tofano put it into the back of the net from 12 yards out. Evansville's third and final goal of the game came in the 53rd minute. Lambert notched her second goal off of a corner kick. Although Tech was scoreless during the match, the Hokies outshot the Aces 16-10, but were able to put only three shots on goal compared to five by Evansville. Tech's Mary Elizabeth Newton and Laurie Beth Puglisi led the team in shots with three apiece. Newton, Julian Johnson and Mallory Jones each notched one shot on goal. Tech is back in Blacksburg this Thursday for its ACC-opener against Duke. The action starts at 7 p.m. The first 150 fans will receive a free Virginia Tech hat.
