The program consists of five areas, academic excellence, athletic excellence, personal development and commitment to service and career development.

In attendance to receive the award were Athletic Director Jim Weaver, Associate Athletics Director Jon Jaudon and the Director of the Office of Student Life Megan Armbruster. Virginia Tech becomes the 43rd Division 1A athletics department to be recognized as a program of excellence since the inception of the award in 1997.

"It is a great honor to be recognized by your peers for a job well done," Weaver said. "Our department will continue to work hard to equip our student-athletes with the skills to compete in life after their college days have ended. Special thanks to Megan Armbruster who has led our charge in this area and to the academic support staff, university departments and coaches who have supported and participated in this team effort that has resulted in this public recognition."
