NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Virginia Tech relied on a strong defensive effort and two goals in the final seven minutes of the match to defeat Vanderbilt 2-0 in exhibition action Friday evening at the VU Soccer Complex.

Laurie Beth Puglisi recorded her second goal of the preseason when she headed in the game winner in the 83rd minute right in front of the goal off a corner kick by Erin Moore. Julian Johnson then added an insurance goal on an assist from Emily Jukich four minutes later to seal the victory.

"I think it's another good outing for our team," Head Coach Kelly Cagle said. "The best part about it is that we didn't give up a goal, and the longer we can go through games carrying a shutout, the more that we will have the chance of getting the result we want.

"I think what differentiates our team this year from last year is the depth we have upfront," Cagle added. "Right before we got both of those goals, we actually had probably five or six new players on the field, so not only did it give rest to some of our players that ended up scoring the goals, it just makes other teams more honest to have to play us harder for 90 minutes. We have better depth, and we'll be able to go harder and better for longer periods."

Redshirt junior Ashley Owens had another strong outing in goal, recording three saves in 77 minutes. Sophomore forward Robin Chidester filled in for the final 13 minutes as an experiment for Cagle to see if Chidester could help provide depth to the position. Chidester recorded two saves to help preserve the shutout.

The Hokies carry momentum from winning their two exhibition matches, by a total score of 7-0, to Radford for the season opener on Friday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m.
