Freshman forward receives Tech's first such honor since 2005
September 10, 2007

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech freshman forward Marika Gray was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week after scoring both of the Hokies' goals in a 2-1 victory over No. 13 Tennessee.

The victory over the Southeastern Conference opponent during the Hawthorn Suites Hokie Invitational was the program's second-ever win over a ranked opponent, the first coming in 2004 against No. 19 Wake Forest.

Gray (Alexandria, Va.) scored the first goal against the Lady Volunteers at the 18th minute off an assist from sophomore Robin Chidester (Virginia Beach, Va.). About two minutes later, fellow freshman Kelly Lynch (Mullica Hill, N.J.) would put the ball in position for Gray to score what would eventually become the game winner.

This was the second time in three games that Gray scored two goals, the first coming in a 3-0 season-opening win at Radford.

On Sunday, Gray took three shots with one on goal as the Hokies tied Loyola (Md.) 1-1 to close out the tournament.

Gray currently ranks among the top five ACC leaders in five statistical categories, tying for second in game-winning goals (2) and tying for third in points (8), points per game (2.00), goals (4) and goals per game (1.00).

This marks the third time a Hokie has won the conference player of the week award since Tech joined the ACC in 2004. Goalkeeper Mallory Soldner (Oct. 24, 2005) and forward Ashley Stinson (Sept. 4, 2004) were given the previous distinctions.

Also on Monday, the Virginia Tech athletic department recognized the efforts of redshirt junior Ashley Owens (Greensboro, N.C.) for her role in the program's historic victory. Named Virginia Lottery Athlete of the Week, Owens tied a career single-match high in saves with seven to preserve the win.

The Hokies (2-1-1) will be back in action this weekend when they travel to George Mason for a 7 p.m. nightcap on Friday. Tech then returns home to host Elon on Sunday at 1 p.m., which will be web cast on ACC Select.
