November 8, 2007

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech forward Laurie Beth Puglisi (Arlington, Va.) earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Team honors for her outstanding work in the classroom and on the field, as announced by CoSIDA.

The junior carries a grade point average above 3.30 in marketing and becomes the first Hokie to receive the honor since Molly McCall (2002-2005) was named to the third team in 2005.

Puglisi had another productive season for the Hokies, finishing second on the team with five goals and third with 10 points total. She scored Tech's lone goal in the 1-1 draw against Loyola (Md.) and recorded game-winners against Elon and NC State, respectively.

This is Puglisi's second academic honor in women's soccer, which includes last season being named to the All-ACC Academic team as a sophomore.

To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. A student-athlete is not eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution. In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
