VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Hokies (2-1-0) claimed victory over the Lehigh Mountain Hawks (1-1-0) in their second and final game of the Villanova Classic on Sunday morning. Junior forward Marika Gray was the scorer for the Hokies, netting her first goal of the season and first since returning from injury.
The Hokies dominated the ball for most of the first half and took eight of their 14 total shots during that time. Gray got things going for the Hokies in the 32nd minute of play, just after Kelsey Mitchell’s header off a Kelsey Billups corner kick missed wide right. The Hokies got the ball back immediately after the miss and Gray buried the ball in the net from the top left corner of the box. Senior Robin Chidester assisted the goal, which brings her to two assists on the season.
Tech continued to fire in the second half but could not connect. Freshman Kelly Conheeney finished the game with three shots, while four other starts recorded two shots apiece. The Hawks took just four shots in the contest, two of which were on goal but denied by junior goalkeeper Rebekah Brook. Brook recorded her second shutout of the season in the win over the Hawks, making two saves before being relieved by senior keeper Stephanie Balanoff for the final 18 minutes of the game. The Hokies will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. as they head to Greensboro, N.C., to take on in-state rival VCU at UNC Greensboro’s Spartan Classic.
