Hokies tie Liberty, 1-1, in exhibition opener

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech and Liberty battled to a 1-1 tie in a women’s soccer exhibition match on Tuesday night at Thompson Field in Blacksburg. This was the exhibition opener for both squads.

The Hokies took a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute, when sophomore Jordan Hemmen headed in a cross off a corner kick by redshirt senior Kallie Peurifoy. Tech held the lead until the final 13 seconds of the scrimmage, when Liberty’s Sarah Erickson netted a contested ball off a corner kick, to tie the match with 12.4 seconds remaining.

The Hokies outshot the Flames, 15-8. Liberty saved four Tech shots, while Mandy McGlynn recorded the Hokies’ lone save of the contest.

Virginia Tech and Liberty did not play an overtime period in tonight’s scrimmage.

The Hokies return to Thompson Field on Saturday night, as they face UNC Charlotte in the second of their two scrimmages. Game time is 7 p.m.

Tech will open regular season play on Aug. 18 & 20, when they travel to Southern California to take on San Diego and Pepperdine in the University of San Diego Tournament.

“One of our goals was to get a shutout. It was our first goal to defend well and not be sloppy in defending. To improve some of our defending from last year and I thought, for the most part, we did a pretty good job. They scored in the final seconds on a corner that we didn’t clear and was a great learning experience for us.”

“As far as what we have been doing for five training days, I think we looked solid. We looked better than I thought we would at this stage. I thought we did a good job moving the ball and made some really good combination plays.”

“We have to be sharper in the final third, better decision-making, some final pass and goal-scoring passes. Those will come, but I thought we controlled much of the game.”
