Virginia Tech tied Pepperdine, 1-1, in double overtime in women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon. The match was the Hokies’ second game in the University of San Diego Tournament at Toreros Stadium in San Diego.

Pepperdine got on the scoreboard first, as Devyn Gilfoy netted a pass from Brie Welch in the 24th minute. The score remained 1-0 at the intermission and into the second half. Tech tie the match in the 64th minute, as Heather Timothy finished a corner kick, gaining assists from both Kelsey Irwin and Kallie Peurifoy. Both teams had chances the rest of the way, but the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Hokies outshot the Waves, 15-14 and had a 16-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Mandy McGlynn recorded seven saves in the contest.

The Hokies return to Blacksburg this week for the home opener, Friday night at 7 p.m., against the College of Charleston.

“I was happy that we were able to come back after being down 1-0. I was happy we were able to come back and tie the game. I thought we deserved more at times. We were a bit unlucky not to be able to put the game away a little bit earlier. Unfortunately, when it goes to overtime, it’s a game that can go either way.”

“Pepperdine was a good, organized team that was a good challenge for us early in the year. It was one of the games that I wish we could have put away to win it. I’m proud of the girls to come back. It’s a good character trait to earn the tie.”

“We’re looking forward to regrouping, heading home and getting ready for next week.”
