Hokies remain unbeaten with win over UALR

BLACKSBURG, VA.. -- Virginia Tech's women's tennis team kept its' perfect season intact with a 5-2 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock Saturday afternoon at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Tech improved to 7-0 on the year and will face BIG EAST rival West Virginia at 7 p.m. today. The Trojans are coached by former Tech men's assistant coach Tommy McDonald.

Tech won the doubles point to open the match then won four of the six singles matches to capture the victory. In singles action, Carolyn Kramer (So., Manchester, Mo.) won her No. 2 match 6-3, 6-2 against Montserrat Flores and Ginger Lowdermilk (Jr., Bossier City, La.) had no trouble at No. 4 with Vanessa Nieto winning 6-1, 6-0.

The other singles win came at No. 5 as Elissa Kinard (So., Charleston, S.C.) defeated Ellie Vicary 6-1, 6-3 and Zdenka Videnova (Sr., Skopje, Macedonia) won her No. 6 match 6-4, 6-1 over Bindiya Parekh. The Hokies two losses occurred at No. 1 where Kristen Stubbs (Sr., Hilton Head, S.C.) lost 7-5, 6-3 to Maria Julieta Lillo and at No. 3 as Meredith Vincent (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) fell 6-4, 6-4 versus Cecelia Poveda.

Tech opened the match by narrowly winning the doubles point as Lowdermilk/Stubbs won 8-5 at No. 2 over Flores/Poveda while Lam/Videnova eased past Nieto/Vicary 8-6 in the No. 3 match. Kramer/Kinard lost at No. 1 to Lillo/Parekh, 8-6.

"Arkansas-Little Rock played great today and we stepped up as a team and took care of business," said Virginia Tech head coach Lisa Hart. "We are looking forward to our BIG EAST rival West Virginia tonight."

Following tonight's match with the Mountaineers, the Hokies will host Middle Tennessee State on Sun., Feb. 9 at 12:30 p.m.
