HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Virginia Tech women's tennis team defeated Southern Mississippi, 5-4, today, at Tatum Park. The Hokies won 4-of-6 singles matches and one doubles match.

Tech took the 1-0 lead when Kristin Stubbs defeated Almat Gaude, 6-2, 7-5 before USM tied the match with Caroline Weems winning 7-5, 6-4 over Ines Khelifi.

The Hokies won the next three singles matches to take the 4-1 lead. Kristin Lanio defeated Patricia Kundisova, 6-1, 7-6 (4) at No. 3 singles, Antonella Pozzi defeated Jackie Press, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4 singles and Bridget Bruner won No. 5 singles over Shawny Price, 6-2, 6-2. So. Miss. cut the Tech lead to 4-2 as Marie Lindberg defeated Danielle Faucher, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.

The Golden Eagles tied the match at 4-4, winning No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Gaude and Weems defeated Lanio/ and Stubbs, 8-5, at No. 1doubles and Tiina Rautajoki and Lindberg won at No. 2 doubles, defeating Pozzi and Khelifi, 9-3 (3).

With the match tied at 4-4, the Hokies won No. 3 doubles to win the match, 5-4. Michelle Martaus and Bruner teamed up to defeat Prew and Kundisova,, 9-7.

Virginia Tech raises its record to 9-3, while Southern Mississippi drops to 6-6. Tech will face New Orleans in New Orleans, La., on Sunday, March 12, at 2 p.m.
