Hokies Fall to No. 28 Wake Forest, 4-0, at the ACC Championships
Tech finishes the year 7-17

CARY, N.C. - No. 11 seed Virginia Tech was shutout by No. 6 seed Wake Forest, 4-0, in its opening match of the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Tennis Championships at the Cary Tennis Center this afternoon. The loss dropped the Hokies to 7-17 overall while the 28th-ranked Demon Deacons improved to 13-9 on the year.
The Demon Deacons earned the doubles point by winning the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. Tech's team of Anat Elazari and Jessica Long fell to the ITA's 17th-ranked team of Karin Coetzee and Alex Hirsch by a score of 8-2 in the No. 1 match. Meredith Holmes and Bethan James of Virginia Tech lost their No. 3 match to Alisha Talbot and Jenna Loeb, 8-3.
Wake Forest then swept three singles matches, which was enough to clinch the match (4-0). Bethan James (Fr., Flintshire, UK) forfeit her No. 4 match to Jenna Loeb. Meredith Holmes (Jr., Bloomington, Ind.) dropped a quick 6-0, 6-0 match to Alisha Talbot in the No. 6 position. In the No. 2 spot, Jessica Long (Fr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) lost to 57th-ranked Ashlee Davis in straight sets. Long, who was out for the Hokies for several weeks, competed for the first time since March 29th.
Next up for Wake Forest is a 3 p.m. contest versus the No. 2 seed, ninth-ranked Miami, on Friday. The two semi-final matches will be played on Saturday, April 23 then the championships concluded with the 11 a.m. finals match on Sunday.
