Hokies finish fourth in BIG EAST Tournament

Coral Gables, Fla. - Second-seeded Notre Dame defeated No. 1 Virginia Tech, 4-2, to win the 2004 BIG EAST Men's Tennis Championship and earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA's. No. 2 Miami claimed the women's crown with a 4-0 victory over top-seeded Notre Dame at the Neil Schiff Tennis Complex in Coral Gables, Fla. With the win, the Hurricanes earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The women's finals will be held May 20-29 at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. The men's NCAA finals are at the University of Tulsa in Tulsa, Okla., May 22-31.
MEN
No. 2 Notre Dame defeated top-seed Virginia Tech, 4-2, for its fourth BIG EAST title. The Irish took the second and third doubles, to go on top, 1-0. Tech then took the number one and four singles, but Notre Dame held on with wins at the No. 3, 5 and 6 spots. The deciding match came at the number three singles position, where Stephan Bass of Notre Dame took Arvid Puranen from Tech to three sets before claiming the final point for the Irish victory. Third-seeded Miami won at the bottom three singles positions and at No. 2 and 3 doubles to claim a 4-0 victory over No. 4 St. John's in the men's consolation match. With the win, the Hurricanes earn a third-place finish at the championship. WOMEN
Second-seeded Miami split the No. 2 and 3 doubles with top-seed Notre Dame, before the duo of Megan Bradley and Melissa Applebaum (UM) defeated Catrina and Christian Thompson (ND), 8-6, for the doubles point at the number one spot. The Hurricanes then took the No. 1, 3 and 5 singles to top the Irish, 4-0, for their second BIG EAST title in three years and eighth overall. In the women's consolation match, No. 3 Boston College defeated fourth-seeded Virginia Tech, 4-2, for third-place at this year's championship. The Eagles took the doubles point with wins at the number one and three spots, while the Hokies captured the No. 2 doubles. BC then won at the No. 2, 5 and 6 singles to take third-place over VT.
