BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's tennis team is ranked 12th in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Region rankings following another successful season. The Hokies also had a singles player and one doubles team receive an East Region ranking.

Tech (17-11) finished third in the BIG EAST Conference tournament for the second straight season but improved on last year's 12-12 record. The Hokies defeated three ranked opponents during the year with a line-up that at times included one senior, one junior, one sophomore and three freshmen. The East Region, largest in the nation, includes 92 teams.

Kristen Stubbs (Jr., Hilton Head, S.C) was ranked 17th out of 736 collegiate players in the region following a 20-15 season including an appearance in the championship match of the Virginia Tech Fall Invitational last September. Stubbs played at the top of the Tech line-up all year and was selected as the recipient of the East Region "Cissie Leary Award for Sportmanship." She was also chosen to represent Virginia Tech at the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference which was held in May in Orlando, Fla.

In doubles, Stubbs and teammate Felice Lam (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) were ranked eighth after compiling a 12-6 record and advancing to the semifinals of the VT Invitational. Lam suffered a season-ending knee injury against Iowa in late February but is expected to return next season.

The Hokies return five of six starters next year and will open the fall season Sept. 20-22 at the William & Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va.
