Hokies net 5-2 win over East Carolina
Tech improves to 2-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women's tennis team won its' second consecutive match with a 5-2 win Tuesday afternoon over East Carolina at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. The Hokies, improved to 2-1 with the victory while the Pirates fell to 5-2 on the year
Tech opened the dual match by taking all three doubles contests for the first point, then won four of the six singles events.
In singles, Inga Beermann (Fr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany), ranked No. 100 nationally, cruised past Anca Dumitru at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2, while Anat Elazari, ranked No. 88 nationally, (Sr., Tiberias, Israel) had no trouble with Gillie Bailey at No. 2 winning, 6-1, 6-1. Jessica Long (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) picked up a 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 3 over Mireia Gol and Ashley James (Jr., Williamsburg, Va.) won 6-3, 6-0, in her No. 4 contest versus Luiza Borges. The Hokies dropped the final two singles contests as J.J. Larson (So., Orchard Park, N.Y.) lost to Kirsten Buchanan, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (8) at No. 5 and Bethan James (So., Flintshire, UK) fell in the No. 6 contest, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (7) against Hannah Priest. A 10-point super tiebreaker was used in lieu of a third set once the dual match outcome had been decided.
The match opened with Tech winning all three doubles contests. James/Long took an easy 8-1 win at No. 3 over Dumitru/Alex Smith and the Hokies clinched the doubles point as Elazari/Larson won 8-5 in the No. 1 match. Beermann/Abbey Walker (Fr., Lancaster, S.C) completed the sweep with a 9-7 victory at No. 2 against Borges/Gol.
Tech returns to action on Feb. 12 when the Hokies entertain Davidson at 1 p.m.
