INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - The NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee has selected Virginia Tech's Inga Beermann as one of the 64 singles players that will compete in the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships hosted by Stanford University. Beermann received an at-large bid to the national tournament.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif., following the conclusion of the team championship (May 18-22). Pairings for the individual tournament will be released on May 22.
"We are very excited and proud about Inga's selection to the NCAA Championships," said Virginia Tech head women's tennis coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods. "It is a great honor for her and a great reward for all of her hard work and dedication this season. This is a big step for our program to have Inga representing Virginia Tech at the national tournament and we are looking forward to the event later this month."
Beermann (Fr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) is ranked No. 53 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. She posted a 28-9 dual match singles record this season including a 6-5 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference playing at the No. 1 position. Beermann picked up ACC victories during the regular season over current No. 37 Jenna Long (North Carolina), No. 44 Alex Hirsch (Wake Forest), No. 110 Szilvia Szegedi (Boston College) and No. 114 Douglas Wink (Virginia).
In order for Beermann to become an All-American, she must win two matches to finish as one of the final 16 competitors at the championships.
