Ten Hokies to see action in tournament
September 14, 2006

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's tennis team will travel to Williamsburg, Va. this weekend to participate in the 14th Annual William & Mary Invitational. Ten Hokies will see action in the individual event in six singles and three doubles flights. The three-day tournament, featuring players from Arkansas, Boston College, Maryland, Marshall, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Penn, Purdue, Richmond, Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth, Virginia Tech, and the host Tribe, concludes with Sunday finals in all brackets.

The Hokies will be led this weekend by 37th-ranked Inga Beermann (So., Bad Salzuflen, Germany), a member of the 2006 ACC All-conference team, who finished her freshman season with a 29-9 overall record and ranked 52nd in the nation. She is seeded third in the Flight A singles bracket. Beermann became the first Virginia Tech women's tennis player to participate in the NCAA Tournament, making her way to the Round of 32 before bowing out. She was also selected as the ITA's East Region Rookie of the Year and received the same award from the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). She was also selected to the All-ACC Academic team and was named an ITA Scholar Athlete.

Other Hokies to see action include Jessica Brouwer (So., Maarssen, Netherlands), Chelsea Cramp (So., Potomac, Md.), Ashley James (Sr., Williamsburg, Va.), Bethan James (Jr., Flintshire, UK), Mary Kate James (Fr., Williamsburg, Va.), Natalie Kretzer (So., Chesterfield, Va.), J.J. Larson (Jr., Orchard Park, N.Y.), Jessica Long (Jr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) and Abbey Walker (So., Lancaster, S.C.).

Drawsheets with match results and scores will be periodically updated online at Tournament Central, located at TribeAthletics.com. Play is scheduled to began at 8 a.m. Friday.

Following this weekend's action, Beermann will travel to Pacific Palisades, Calif., Oct. 3-8, to participate in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American while the remainder of the team will host the Hokie Fall Invitational, Oct. 6-8, at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
