CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Virginia Tech proved to be no match Wednesday afternoon for No. 5 North Carolina dropping a 7-0 decision to Tar Heels at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the University of North Carolina campus. The Tar Heels improved to 11-3, 1-0 on the season while Virginia Tech, ranked No. 68 nationally, fell to 7-2, 0-2.

North Carolina swept all three doubles matches to win the first point of the evening then won all of the six singles matches to record the win.

In singles, Inga Beermann (So., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) put up a tough battle against third-ranked Jenna Long before losing, 6-0, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (6), at No. 1, while Ashley James (Sr., Williamsburg, Va.) lost to 74th-ranked Katrina Tsang, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 2 contest. Karina Porushkevich (Fr., Los Angeles, Calif.) lost in the No. 3 event, 6-2, 6-3, to No. 79 Austin Smith and Jessica Long (Jr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) dropped a 7-5, 6-2, decision at No. 4 versus Saran Anundsen. J.J. Larson (Jr., Orchard Park, N.Y.) dropped the No. 5 contest, 6-4, 6-0, to Caitlin Collins and Jessica Brouwer (So., Maarssen, Netherlands) lost 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 against 58th-ranked Sanaz Marand.

In doubles, Tech's Beermann/Larson lost their No. 1 match, 8-0, against 17th-ranked Collins/Marand while Long/Abbey Walker (So., Lancaster, S.C.) lost at No. 2, 8-2, to the 43rd-ranked duo of Anundsen/Tsang. The Tar Heels completed the doubles sweep with Long/Smith defeating Brouwer/Bethan James (Jr., Flintshire, UK), 8-4.

Tech returns to action on Mar. 3 with a 10 a.m. match at No. 14 Virginia Commonwealth.
