Hokies knock off Cal-State Northridge, 4-3
Tech improves to 8-5

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Virginia Tech women's tennis team wrapped up its west-coast swing Friday with a 4-3 win at Cal State Northridge. The Hokies improved to 8-5, while Matadors fell to 4-3.

Tech won two of the three doubles matches to claim the first point of the evening before splitting the singles matches. The top duo of Inga Beermann and J.J. Larson defeated Silvia Gutierrez/Ana Matijasevic, 9-7, before Jessica Long and Abbey Walker fell to Kanykey Koichumanova/Canna Furuta, 8-5, at No. 2. Jessica Brouwer and Ashley James then earned the decision with an 8-1 rout over Kasia Krasinska/Sonya Kumar at No. 3.

In singles action, every contest went in straight sets. No. 72-ranked Beermann (So., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) defeated Gutierrez 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1. The Matadors captured wins at Nos. 2 and 3, as Koichumanova beat Long (Jr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) 6-2, 6-3, and Furuta bested James (Sr., Williamsburg, Va.) 6-2, 6-2. Tech answered right back at Nos. 4 and 5 though, as Larson (Jr., Orchard Park, N.Y.) won 6-4, 6-0 over Matijasevic, and Walker (So., Lancaster, S.C.) defeated Krasinska 6-2, 6-1. Northridge's Kumar finished off Natalie Kretzer (So., Chesterfield, Va.) 6-1, 6-4.

The Hokies return to action on March 15 with a 4 p.m. match at archrival Virginia.
