Tech nips Furman, 4-3
Hokies conclude opening day sweep

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Virginia Tech women's team concluded an opening day sweep with a narrow 4-3 win over host Furman Saturday evening. Tech defeated Georgia State, 6-1, earlier in the day to open the dual match season. The contest was held at the Minor Herndon Mickel Tennis Center on the Furman University campus.

Tech (2-0), ranked No. 60 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason national poll, won two of the three doubles matches for the first point of the day then split the six singles contests for the victory.

In singles, Inga Beermann (Jr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) won comfortably at No. 2, 6-3, 6-1, against Monica Arguello while Jessica Long (Sr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) had no trouble at No. 3 defeating Lauren Osbourne, 6-1, 6-4. Tech's other win occurred at No. 6 as Abbey Walker ( Jr., Lancaster, S.C.) Natasa Manojolvic, 6-4, 7-5.

In other singles results, Yasmin Hamza (Fr., Cairo, Egypt) lost 6-2, 6-2. at No. 1 versus Laura Gioia, Jessica Brouwer (Jr., Maarsen, Netherlands) lost a tight, 7-5, 7-6 (5), match at No. 4 to Jessica Preeg, and Holly Johnson (Fr., Tallahassee, Fla.) fell, 6-2, 6-0, against Lauren Tomory in the No. 5 match.

In doubles action, Johnson/Long won at No. 2, 8-4, over Osbourne/Christina Swindell, and Tech clinched the point as Beerman/J.J. Larson (Sr., Orchard Park, N.Y.) defeated Arguello/Tomory, 8-1, at No. 3. Brouwer/Hamza lost the No. 1 match, 8-4, to Gioia/Manojovic.

Tech returns to action on Sat., Feb. 2, when the Hokies host Wisconsin at 4 p.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
