Hokies remain unbeaten

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's team won its' home-opener, 6-1, over Wisconsin Saturday evening at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. The Badgers fall to 2-1 with the loss.

Tech (3-0), ranked No. 63 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason national poll, swept the three doubles matches for the first point of the day then took five of the six singles contests for the victory.

In singles, Inga Beermann (Jr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) won comfortably at No. 1, 6-3, 6-1, against Emese Kardhordo while Jessica Long (Sr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) gave Tech a 3-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-2, win in her No. 3 match over Katya Mirnova. The Hokies clinched the match as Jessica Brouwer (Jr., Maarssen, Netherlands) won the No. 4 contest, 6-4, 6-4, versus Jessica Seyferth.

Wisconsin got on the board with a win at No. 5 when Morgan Tuttle defeated J.J. Larson (Sr., Orchard Park, N.Y.), 6-3, 6-4. The Hokies made it 5-1 as Abbey Walker (Jr., Lancaster, S.C.) took a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) decision over Chelsea Nusslock in the No. 6 match. A super tiebreaker was used in lieu of the third set since the team outcome had been determined and the third yet had not yet begun. Yazmin Hamza (Fr., Cairo, Egypt) concluded the match and picked up her first collegiate win at No. 2 winning 3-6, 6-3, 2-2 (7-4). A tiebreaker was used to conclude the third set at 2-2.

In doubles action, Beermann/Larson won the No. 3 doubles, 8-3, over Mirnova/Tuttle and Holly Johnson (Fr., Tallahassee, Fla)/Long clinched the point with a 8-5 win at No. 5 versus Nusslock/Seyferth. The Hokies completed the sweep as Brouwer/Hamza defeated Carpenter/Kardhordo, 8-7. A tiebreaker was played at 7-7 once the outcome of the double had been determined.

Tech returns to action on Sun., Feb. 3, when the Hokies host No. 50 Ohio State at noon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
