Tech beats Old Dominion, 5-2
Hokies host Elon at 3 p.m.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's team won the first of two matches Saturday afternoon, 5-2, over Old Dominion at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Tech will host Elon later today at 3 p.m.

Tech (4-1), ranked No. 64 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason national poll, took the doubles for the first point of the day then won four of the six singles contests for the victory.

In singles, J.J. Larson (Sr., Orchard Park, N.Y.) made quick work at No. 6 of Jana Kubicikova, 6-0, 6-1, and Yasmin Hamza (Fr., Cairo, Egypt) gave the Hokies a 3-0 advantage with her 6-0, 6-2, victory at No. 2 over Barbara Costa. Old Dominion got on the board with as Joanna Dobrowolska defeated Abbey Walker (Jr., Lancaster, S.C.), 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5, but Tech clinched the contest as Jessica Long (Sr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) defeated Daniela Cohen in the No. 3 match, 6-3, 6-1.

Old Dominion picked up its' second point when Nadine Fahoum defeated Jessica Brouwer (Jr., Maarssen, Netherlands), 4-6, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 4. and the Hokies closed out the scoring with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, by Inga Beermann (Jr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) over Charleen Haaroff.

In doubles action, Beermann/Larson won the No. 2 doubles, 8-6, over Costa/Dobrowolska and Holly Johnson (Fr., Tallahassee, Fla)/Long clinched the point with a 8-4 win at No. 3 versus Cohen/Kubicikova. ODU won the final match at No. 1 as Nadine Fahoum/Haarhoff defeated Brouwer/Hamza, 8-6.
