CLEMSON, S.C. - The Virginia Tech women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision Saturday afternoon at Clemson in a match played at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on the Clemson University campus. Clemson, ranked No. 23 nationally, improved to 9-9 overall and 5-3 in the ACC with the win, while the Hokies, ranked No. 51 nationally, fell to 14-8, 2-6.

Clemson swept the doubles competition for the first point then captured five of the six singles matches for the victory.

In singles, Tech lone victory came in the No. 5 match as Jessica Brouwer (Jr., Maarssen, Netherlands) won 6-3, ret. against Alexandra Luc who retired due to illness. Yasmin Hamza (Fr., Cairo, Egypt), ranked No. 120, lost her No. 1 match, 6-2, 6-2 to No. 2 Ani Mijacika while Inga Beermann (Jr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) lost the No. 2 contest, 6-3, 6-2, against No. 109 Estefana Balda. In other singles results, Jessica Long (Sr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) lost 6-4, 7-6 (3), at No. 3 versus 85th-ranked Carol Salge, J.J. Larson (Sr., Orchard Park, N.Y.) fell 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4 to Ina Hadziselimovic, and Holly Johnson (Fr. Tallahassee, Fla.) lost 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 6 match to Laurianne Henry.

The match opened with the Tigers sweeping the doubles competition. Tech's Brouwer/Larson lost 8-6 at No. 1 against 8th-ranked Mijacka/Salge, Hamza/Long fell, 8-4, at No. 2 versus Balda/Federica van Adrichem and Beermann/Johnson dropped the No. 3 match, 8-2, to Ina Hadziselimovic/Luc.

The road only gets tougher for Tech as the Hokies play at defending national champion and 2nd-ranked Georgia Tech Sunday at 10 a.m.
