No. 2 Yellow Jackets beat Tech, 6-1
Hokies win the doubles point against the defending champions
April 6, 2008

ATLANTA - The Virginia Tech women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision Sunday afternoon at Georgia Tech in a match played at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. The 2007 NCAA champion Yellow Jackets, currently ranked No. 2 nationally, improve to 16-4 and 8-1 in the ACC, while the No. 51 Hokies fell to 14-9, 2-7.

Georgia Tech swept the singles competition with the help of five top-40 nationally-ranked players after losing two of the three doubles matches for the victory.

In doubles play, the Yellow Jackets began the day with McCray/Hickey defeating Hamza/Long, 8-4, at No. 2. However, the Hokies rebounded as Brouwer/Larson beat Miller/Sasha Krupina, 8-5, at No. 1, followed by Beermann/Johnson earning the deciding point with a 9-8 (7-5) victory over Flower/McDowell.

The momentum quickly switched back to the home team though as Georgia Tech's only unranked player on the court, Noelle Hickey, earned a 6-1, 6-0 decision against J.J. Larson (Sr., Orchard Park, N.Y.) at No. 4. Yasmin Hamza (Fr., Cairo, Egypt, ranked No. 120, lost her No. 2 match, 6-0, 6-2, against No. 4 Amanda McDowell. In other singles results, Inga Beermann (Jr., Bad Salzuflen, Germany) lost the No. 1 contest, 6-1, 6-2 against No. 6 Kristi Miller, Holly Johnson (Fr., Tallahassee, Fla.) fell 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 to No. 33 Maya Johansson, and Jessica Long (Sr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) lost 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 3 contest to No. 36 Whitney McCray. Georgia Tech completed the singles sweep with No. 39 Kristen Flower's 7-6(5), 6-0 win over Jessica Brouwer (Jr., Maarsseen, Netherlands) at No. 5.

The Hokies conclude their five-match road trip on Wednesday with a visit to Marshall for a 1 p.m. start time before returning home next weekend for the final two matches of the regular season.
