Hokies defeat William & Mary, 6-1

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The No. 59 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team defeated William & Mary, 6-1 on Tuesday evening at the Millie West Tennis Center in Williamsburg, Va. Tech improves to 11-5 on the season while the Tribe falls to 4-12.

The Hokies won two of three doubles matches to get out to a 1-0 lead. Shannon Betts and Courtney Rauscher paired up in the No. 2 match for a 9-7 win against Anik Cepeda and Hope Johnson.

In the No. 3 doubles, Emily Lauten and Isel Martinez-Marcos rolled past Tori Ford and Sydney Smith, 8-1.

Betts gave the Hokies a 2-0 advantage in the match, winning the No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Johnson. The Hokies went up 3-0 as Rauscher defeated Cepeda, 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 4.

The Tribe got on the board with a win in the No. 1 singles before the Hokies secured the team win as Carol Kahoun defeated Katie Kargl, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 in the No. 5 singles.

Tech scored its final point in the No. 6 singles where Lauten notched a 6-4, 7-5 decision against Smith.

The Hokies will return to Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on Friday, March 23 against North Carolina in a 2:30 p.m. match.
