BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team defeated the Louisville Cardinals 5-2 Friday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Carol Kahoun and Raluca Mita gave Tech a quick doubles win at No. 2 with an 8-1 victory over Louisville’s Rebecca Shine and Rebecca Bodine. The Cardinals bounced back with a come from behind 8-6 victory at No. 1 as Julia Fellerhoff and Manuela Velasquez defeated the Hokies’ Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford.
Louisville quickly rebound to tie the match at one all as Manuela Velasquez defeated Tech’s Raluca Mita 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.
The Hokies got their first singles point of the afternoon when Carol Kahoun defeated Stefanie Villajuan 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5. Tea Ivanovic extended the Tech lead to 3-1 with her 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Rebecca Bodine at No. 6.
Louisville fought back, though, as #62 Rebecca Shine defeated Isel Martinez-Marcos 7-6(2), 6-3 at No. 2. The Cardinals would come up short though when Kelly Williford clinched the match for the Hokies with a 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4 win at No. 4.
Ilinca Stoica rounded out the Tech campaign with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1 over #84 Julia Fellerhoff.
The Hokies return to action Sunday, February 3 at 10 a.m. to take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
