BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team defeated the No. 41 Minnesota Golden Gophers 5-2 Sunday in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The Hokies began the day with their fourth straight win of the doubles point. At No. 2, Carol Kahoun and Raluca Mita kicked things off for Tech with an 8-3 victory over Yuliana Umanots and Jessika Mozia.

Tech clinched the doubles point when Ilinca Stocia and Kelly Williford won 8-5 at No. 1 over Natallia Pintusova and Tereza Brichacova.

Minnesota ended doubles play with a win at No. 3 as Aria Lambert and Doron Muravnik fended off a come back by Tea Ivanovic and Emily Lauten, who trailed 2-7, to take the match 8-7(4).

Kelly Williford kept things rolling for the Hokies as she made quick work of her match at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Aria Lambert. Tea Ivanovic extended the Hokie lead to 3-0 with her 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 over Doron Muravnik.

Raluca Mita clinched the victory for Tech when she defeated Yuliana Umanots 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3.

Minnesota scored its first point of the day with a win by Natallia Pintusova 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 over Ilinca Stoica. The Golden Gophers tallied their only other point of the day as Tereza Brichacova defeated Isel Martinez-Marcos 7-5, 0-6, 6-2.

Carol Kahoun rallied for the Hokies to win 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5 over Jessika Mozia, bringing the score to 5-2.

The Hokies return to action Saturday February 9 as they take on William and Mary at Noon in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
