BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to No. 53 William & Mary 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Third-ranked Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans evened the doubles matches at one as they defeated Ilinca Stoica 8-5 at No. 1.
The Hokies won the doubles point with a tie-break victory at No. 3. Emily Lauten and Isel Martinez-Marcos defeated Anik Cepeda and Sydney Smith 8-7 (5) and propelled the Hokies in to singles play with a 1-0 lead.
Tea Ivanovic quickly extended the Tech lead with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Sydney Smith at No. 6.
William & Mary countered with Leeza Nemchinov’s win over Isel Martinez-Marcos at No. 2, 6-4, 6-1.
The Tech lead stayed at one as Kelly Williford defeated Hope Johnson 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4, but Raluca Mita fell to Leeza Nemchinov 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.
The Tribe tied the match 3-3 as Maria Belaya fended off Ilinca Stoica to win 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 1. Anik Cepeda clinched the come-from-behind victory for William & Mary with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Carol Kaoun at No. 5.
The Hokies are back in action Sunday with a double-header. Tech takes on UMBC at 9:30 a.m. and Liberty at 5 p.m.
