No. 62 Hokies fall to No. 44 Wolfpack

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The No. 62 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to the N.C. State Wolfpack 6-1 Friday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford got things started for the Hokies with a come-from-behind victory over Tatiana Illova and Joelle Kissell 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. The Wolfpack quickly evened doubles play, though, as Nicole Martinez and Elisha Hande defeated Carol Kahoun and Raluca Mita 8-6 at No. 2.

The Wolfpack ultimately won the point as Chloe Smith and Sophie Nelson defeated Tea Ivanovic and Isel Martinez-Marcos 9-8(5) at No. 3 doubles.

The Wolfpack won the first singles point of the afternoon, as Hande defeated Ivanovic 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. N.C. State extended their lead to 3-0 as Rachel James-Baker defeated Martinez-Marcos 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3.

N.C. State clinched the victory with No. 92 Tatiana Illova’s victory over Raluca Mita, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.

Stoica’s play was a highlight for the Hokies as she defeated No. 35 Kissell 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(9) at No. 1 singles.

N.C. State’s success continued, though, as Martinez defeated Williford 7-6(1), 6-4 at No. 4.

The day was rounded out as Smith defeated Kahoun 7-5, 7-6(5) at No. 5 singles.

The Hokies return to action on Sunday, April 5, as they host Wake Forest at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
