    Hokies find success on day two of ITA Regionals
    Six singles, three doubles move on

    CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team continued play in the ITA Atlantic Regional hosted by Virginia today. Tech advanced three doubles teams and six singles players.

    The Hokies saw success early in the day during doubles play. Carol Kahoun and Isel Martinez-Marcos took down seeded Luus/Stanova of Maryland 8-7 (7). Kahoun and Martinez-Marcos will play tomorrow against Mrgola/Manole of West Virginia after their 8-6 defeat of Castro/Ogungbesan from Pitt.

    Raluca Mita and Francesca Fusinato, seeded 9-16, continued the Tech doubles success with their 8-0 rout of Delaware’s Lai/Saffron. Mita and Fusinato will take on third-seeded Barscheuskaya/Yakalueva from VCU tomorrow. They defeated Nederlander/Pascarella from George Washington 8-1.

    The fourth-seeded pair of Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford saw their first action of the tournament today as they topped Egger/Robins of Navy 8-5. Their doubles campaign continues tomorrow against Batey/Doms of Temple, who took down 9-16 seed Noi/Chala from VCU 8-5.

    Tech built on the early doubles success to advance six in the main singles draw. Mita, seeded 5-8, posted a dominating 6-1, 6-2 win over Navy’s Erin Snook. Mita will take on Lana Robins of George Washington after Robins defeated Radford’s Taylor Newman 6-1, 6-2.

    Stoica, also seeded 5-8, brought home a win for the Hokies as well with her 6-3, 6-0 win over Iktesh Chahal of West Virginia. Stoica will play Virginia’s Marie Faure in second-round play. Faure defeated Georgetown’s Sophie Panarese 6-4, 6-1 today.

    Martinez-Marcos pulled off the upset win of the day for the Hokies when she took down 5-8 seed Salome Kvitashvili of VCU 6-1, 4-6, 7-6. Martinez-Marcos faces off with Old Dominion’s Nika Khmolovska tomorrow after Khmolovska won her match against Marshall’s Rachel Morales 6-1, 6-1 today.

    Freshmen Sansitha Nandakumar and Fusinato tallied wins today, as well. Nandakumar took down Marshall’s Kai Broomfield 6-2, 6-3 and will have a test tomorrow when she faces off with third-seeded Stephanie Nauta of Virginia. Nauta defeated Liberty’s Belen Rivera 6-1, 6-2 today.

    Fusinato defeated Hailey Barrett from West Virginia 6-0, 6-3. She will play Maryland’s Nataliya Bredikhina in second-round action. Bredikhina upset 9-16 Katelyn Stokes of Howard 6-4, 6-2 today.

    Wrapping up the Hokie singles success was Williford. Her 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (1) defeat of Liberty’s Mariely Hassey set her up for a match with Pittsburgh’s Taylor Washington. Washington took down Virginia’s Maci Epstein, a 9-16 seed, 6-1, 6-3 today.

    The Hokies continue play in Charlottesville tomorrow with one round of doubles followed by two rounds of singles tomorrow.
