CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team continued their campaign at the ITA Atlantic Regionals today. Play today consisted of two round of singles and one round of doubles. The Hokies advanced two teams of doubles and two singles.
Freshman Francesca Fusinato kicked off her two-win day with a defeat of Maryland’s Nataliya Bredikhina 6-2, 6-0. Fusinato’s big win of the day came when she upset third-seeded Stephanie Nauta of Virginia 6-1, 6-2.
Kelly Williford worked her way into the quarterfinals with two hard-fought wins. An early win over Taylor Washigton of Pittsburgh 7-5, 7-5 set her up to take down 5-8 seed Leeza Nemchinov of William & Mary 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. Williford and Fusinato will face off in the quarterfinals of the singles draw tomorrow.
Williford teamed up with Ilinca Stoica to continue their doubles effort. The fourth-seeded pair defeated Temple’s team of Batey/Doms 8-5. They will play 9-16 seed Epstein/Peretz from Virginia tomorrow in the quarterfinals.
Tech’s other seeded team of Fusinato and Raluca Mita also won. They topped Barscheuskaya/Yakalueva of VCU 8-4. Fusinato and Mita, seeded 9-16, will take on Virginia’s Xi/Faure, a 5-8 seed, tomorrow.
Play continues tomorrow at Virginia with two rounds of singles followed by a round of doubles.
