BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team kicked off the 2014 season with a 6-1 victory over the 74th-ranked Elon Phoenix in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Hokies kicked off the match with convincing doubles wins to give Tech the early 1-0 lead. Freshman Francesca Fusinato and Sophomore Ilinca Stoica teamed up for the first win of the day at No. 2 doubles as they defeated Maria Camara Ruiz and Taylor Casey 6-3.
Williford was able to tally a point for the Hokies, though, as she kicked off Tech’s singles effort with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Khoury at No. 3.
Junior Carol Kahoun gave Tech the 3-0 lead with her comeback victory over Taylor Casey at No. 5. She dropped the first set 3-6 but battled back to take the second set 6-3 and win the tiebreak 10-5.
Nandakumar clinched the victory for the Hokies with her 6-2, 6-3 win over Maria Camara Ruiz at No. 6.
Elon got on the board, though, as Barbora Lazarova defeated Mita 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (3) at No. 4.
The Hokies weren’t done with their effort, however, as Stoica took down 69th-ranked Johnston 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (3) in the No. 1 spot.
Fusinato rounded out the day for Tech with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Jansaker at No. 2 and gave the Hokies the 6-1 victory.
Tech returns to action this evening as they take on Davidson at 6:30 p.m. in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
