BLACKSBURG, Va. — The 54th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team defeated Davidson 6-1 on Saturday evening in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center to begin their season 2-0.
Tech won the doubles point to gain the early 1-0 lead. Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford tallied the first doubles win of the evening over Davidson’s Elaina Cummer and Brites Moniz-Soares 6-2 in the No. 1 slot.
Kahoun kicked off the singles success for the Hokies with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Stein at No. 4 that gave Tech the 2-0 lead.
Martinez-Marcos immediately followed suit as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Crouser in her season debut at No. 3.
Francesca Fusinato fought off a surge by Moniz-Soares to take the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-4 and clinch the victory for the Hokies.
Tea Ivanovic was not far behind Fusinato as she quickly gave Tech the 5-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Held in the No. 6 spot.
Davidson got on the board with a win from Cummer as she defeated Raluca Mita 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2.
Sansitha Nandakumar rounded out the Hokie effort with a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6) victory over Brunner at No. 5.
The Hokies return to action in Ann Arbor, Mich., for a double-header against Michigan and Yale/Tulsa on January 25.
