Kozar, Disbergen win flights at Hokie Invite

Hokie Invitational

BLACKSBURG – Freshman Nika Kozar and sophomore Shene Disbergen claimed their respective flight titles on Sunday at the Hokie Invite.

Kozar outlasted JMU’s Anna Makarova in the honor singles. After giving up the first set 1-6, Kozar rallied to win the second 6-3. In the tiebreak the two went back-and-forth trading points before Kozar secured it 12-10.

In the Ut Prosim singles, Disbergen downed VCU’s Noumea Witmus in tough straight sets with scores of 7-5, 7-5.

Luisa Uscocovich also picked up a singles win for the Hokies on Sunday, defeating Liberty’s Nasha Ghajar 6-1, 6-0.

The Hokies also had a good day in doubles, securing four wins. Disbergen paired up with Sarah Baron to defeat JMU’s Klushka and Petersen 7-6(4) in the Maroon flight. Nancy Ghanem and Fallon Delp downed Melati Devi and Janelle Ghanem of Miami (OH) 7-6(3).

In the Orange doubles, Kozar teamed up with fellow freshman Nina Sorking for a 6-3 win over JMU’s Makarova and Liz Norman. McKenzie Collins and Uscocovich paired up in the same draw for a 7-6(8) win over another JMU duo, Jona Roka and Dylan Owens.

The Hokie Invite wraps up the fall slate for Tech. The team will return to the court in January for a doubleheader on the 26th, hosting ETSU and Appalachian State.
