Tech opens spring with sweep of ETSU

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team opened the season with a sweep of ETSU, defeating the Bucs 7-0 on Friday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Tech (1-0) opened the match winning the doubles point. Katherine Butler and McKenzie Collins paired up at three to defeat Melissa Esguerra and Jayde Viccars 6-2. The Hokies clinched the point on court two where Sarah Baron and Elena Cerezo-Codina knocked off Yi Chi Ma and Alejandra Morales 6-3. Tech also won on court one as Caroline Daxhelet and Natalie Novotna held on to win, 7-5.

The Hokies rolled in singles, taking all six matches in straight sets. Novotna, ranked 25th in the ITA, put Tech up 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Markesini on court one. Freshman Nina Sorkin had a shutout on court six, defeating Esther Guemes 6-0, 6-0.

Fellow freshman Nika Kozar also got her dual career off to a strong start with a 6-0, 6-2 win on court four over Esguerra to secure the team win for the Hokies.

Butler closed out the match on five defeating Morales 6-3, 6-2 win on court five followed quickly by Cerezo-Codina’s 6-3, 6-1 decision over Ma on three.

Daxhelet completed the sweep as she downed Andrea Pasual-Larrinaga 6-4, 6-4 at two.

The Hokies will be back on the court this evening, hosting Appalachian State at 5 p.m.
